Surreal Interactive Unveils Surreal Touch: The First 6DoF VR Controller for Apple Vision Pro

Surreal Interactive has introduced Surreal Touch, a new 6DoF VR controller designed for Apple Vision Pro. Founded by Zhenfei Yang, an expert in SLAM computer vision technology, the startup aims to enhance the VR experience on Vision Pro, which currently lacks tracked controllers. The Surreal Touch uses fisheye tracking cameras and an onboard chipset for spatial positioning, featuring familiar controls like action buttons, a thumbstick, and triggers. It claims less than 10mm positioning accuracy, though this is modest compared to competitors.

The controllers are designed to be used either standalone with Apple Vision Pro via an SDK or for PC VR through Surreal Link, an app offering “4K 120Hz SteamVR graphics.” Demonstrations have shown the controllers in use with popular VR games like Beat Saber and Half-Life: Alyx. Preorders are set to open in August, with the startup promising prompt shipping. If successful, Surreal Touch could significantly enhance the gaming and application capabilities of Apple Vision Pro, bridging the gap for PC VR gamers and new visionOS apps

Apple Secures Observer Role on OpenAI Board Amid ChatGPT Integration

Apple has secured an observer role on the OpenAI board as part of a strategic collaboration announced during WWDC 2024. This partnership will integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, enhancing Apple’s new Apple Intelligence suite. Phil Schiller, an Apple Fellow and former marketing chief, will assume this observer role, attending board meetings without voting rights. This arrangement mirrors Microsoft’s similar position with OpenAI, highlighting the importance Apple places on embedding advanced AI capabilities within its ecosystem. The collaboration is non-monetary, with both companies valuing the integration and exposure as mutually beneficial.

The integration of ChatGPT into Apple’s operating systems is set to significantly boost Siri’s functionality, enabling it to handle more complex queries and tasks. This development underscores Apple’s commitment to advancing AI technology to enhance user experience across its devices. The updates, expected later this year, will initially be available on newer models like the iPhone 15 Pro and devices with Apple silicon chips. This move positions Apple alongside major AI stakeholders like Microsoft, further solidifying its strategic focus on leveraging AI to provide seamless, intelligent interactions for its users.

BMW Partners with Figure to Deploy Humanoid Robots in Manufacturing.

BMW has announced a significant partnership with robotics startup Figure to deploy humanoid robots at its Spartanburg, South Carolina manufacturing plant. This agreement marks a pioneering step as Figure’s robots, designed to handle various tasks typically performed by humans, will be integrated into the production process. Initially, the focus will be on identifying specific use cases where these robots can enhance efficiency, such as tasks requiring dexterity and mobility. This collaboration highlights BMW’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to improve manufacturing processes and maintain a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.

The deployment of Figure’s humanoid robots is part of a broader trend in the automotive industry to incorporate advanced robotics to offset rising labor costs and increase productivity. These robots, equipped with AI and designed to mimic human actions, can perform complex tasks such as handling car parts and navigating the factory floor. This move by BMW follows similar initiatives by other industry giants like Tesla and Hyundai, who are also exploring the potential of humanoid robots in their operations. As these robots become more sophisticated, they are expected to bring about significant changes in manufacturing, offering a glimpse into the future of automation.

West Japan Railways Introduces Humanoid Robot for Infrastructure Maintenance

West Japan Railways (West JR) has unveiled a new humanoid robot designed for infrastructure maintenance on its railway lines. Developed in collaboration with Jinki Ittai Co. and Nippon Signal Co., this robot can carry up to 40kg and operate remotely at heights of up to 12 meters. Controlled via a VR headset by a single operator, it aims to improve safety and efficiency by reducing the need for human workers to climb onto overhead catenary lines, addressing labor shortages and enhancing workplace safety.

The robot will primarily be used for tasks such as reaching and repairing overhead electrical wires, felling trees, painting infrastructure, and replacing or repairing signal hardware. By mechanizing these activities, West JR expects to significantly decrease workplace accidents caused by electric shocks or falls. This innovation is part of West JR’s broader strategy to create a more diverse and inclusive work environment, allowing people of all genders and ages to participate in railway maintenance without the physical demands of high-altitude labor.
